Longer term I hope to start to reconstruct the parish population, family by family, particularly for the 18th century.
In the meantime here are my handy lists of surnames per place derived from baptisms. These are lists of surnames (generally fathers’ surnames) recorded for families having children baptised at Melrose parish in various decades, sorted by place of residence. They aren’t complete lists of surnames resident in these places, being restricted to parents (usually fathers) having children baptised in the period. But it is hoped that gathering this information is useful, showing changing surname patterns over time, at least in part, as well as changing place names occupied in the parish.
